Temporary closure of Warwick Library
Warwick Library has been closed to the public as temperatures have fallen below the legal limit.
A legal minimum set by the Offices, Shops and Railways Act (1963) calls for temperatures to be a minimum of 16 degrees celsius.
The library is currently 13 degrees and is too cold for staff and customers.
The heating is working to full capacity but the fabric of the building, plus its size and its unique location, directly above an unheated car park, has an impact on the climate of the building.
Tracey Baker, divisional library manager for Central Warwickshire, said: "We are having difficulties in maintaining a suitable temperature so have decided to close the library until it has improved and we can provide a safe and comfortable environment. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but hope that customers will appreciate that their safety and comfort are of the utmost importance to us.
"Customers are welcome at other libraries where staff will be pleased to help them find what they need but please check on opening hours over the Christmas holiday period. Or they can renew books online at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/libraries or by calling the 24 hour automated renewals line on 01926 499273.”
Other libraries in the area at Leamington Spa, Lillington and Whitnash are also operating slightly reduced hours during the cold spell. Visit the website or call 01926 410410 for details.
