Give generously to your recycling collection this Christmas

Warwickshire Waste Partnership is urging residents to give generously to their recycling boxes/bins this Christmas in a bid to cut down the amount of waste generated by the festivities.

At Christmas time people generate around 30 per cent more waste – most of which can be recycled. The Royal Mail delivers around 150 million cards and packets each day during the pre-Christmas period and it is estimated that if not recycled, up to one billion Christmas cards (17 for every man, woman and child) could end up in bins across the UK.

And we use an estimated 750 million extra bottles and glass containers and 500 million drinks cans at this time of year.  About 20 to 30 per cent more glass and cans are collected each year over the Christmas period.

If you don’t currently have a recycling box/bin all you need to do is contact your local district or borough council:
· North Warwickshire Borough Council on 01827 715341
· Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council on 024 7637 6376
· Rugby Borough Council on 01788 533533
· Stratford District Council on 01789 267575
· Warwick District Council on 01926 410410

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Warwickshire residents a safe and happy Christmas.

“Recycling is an important activity for us all to take part in all year round, but with more waste generated at Christmas than any other time of the year it is imperative that we fill up our recycling boxes rather than throwing things away.

"Please check your local collection dates and make sure you continue to put your boxes out over the festive period.”
