Look after your trees this winter

Warwickshire County Council is asking landowners in the county who have boundaries next to highways to check on their trees following the recent winter snow and ice.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “Many people are aware of the damage high winds can do to trees, but they are less conscious of the damage that snow and ice can cause. We are asking landowners to seek professional advice if they have trees next to a highway and are unsure what action to take.”

Ken Simons, Warwickshire County Council’s Forestry Officer adds: “Conifers and trees covered in ivy can be susceptible to damage and breakage from snow loading. Previously cracked or split trees and limbs can fail if water collects in them and it then freezes acting as a wedge to force the crack open.”

Landowners who are unsure about the condition of their trees are asked to seek professional advice from a suitably qualified arboriculturalist or forester.

Warwickshire County Council can provide advice to landowners and there is usually a charge for this service.
