Alec celebrates with a tour of the fire station
The quick actions of a Warwickshire firefighter have been commended today by the mother of three year old Kenilworth boy.
Jon Freeman, a firefighter for Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service came across Alec Martin and his mum, Nicola on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 December.
Alec had started to fit and his mum had taken him out of the car and laid him on the ground when he stopped breathing. Jon, who was off duty at the time, administered first aid and made him comfortable until the ambulance arrived.
Alec’s Mum, Nicola Martin said:
“I really appreciate what Jon did. I was really scared as I had my other children with me and there wasn’t anyone around. Alec had been ill and was running a bit of a temperature. He was sitting in the back of the car and then he just started fitting. At one point he stopped breathing and that’s when Jon arrived. I just don’t know what I would have done if he hadn’t come along. He deserves a medal.”
To celebrate Alec making a full recovery, he was invited to Leamington fire station to meet up with his hero, Jon and have a look around the fire station. As part of the tour Alec got to squirt water from a hose and put the blue lights on in the fire engine. He was also able to see the different types of fire engines in the station and the equipment stored on them.
Area Risk Manager Simon Ellershaw said:
“As firefighters we are trained to save lives, its part of what we do whether on or off duty. Despite the fact that Jon was off duty when he came across Alec on the Leamington Road, his quick thinking and application of his training helped to save Alec’s life. His actions are commendable and I’m sure that is something Alec, Nicola or Jon will never forget.
"It was a real pleasure to have Alec visit the station and I hope he has left with some happy memories of the Fire and Rescue Service.”
