Ten years of making Warwickshire’s roads safer

The number of people killed or seriously injured in road casualties in Warwickshire fell for the tenth successive year in 2010, according to provisional figures*.

The figures show that 301 people were killed or seriously injured in reported road collisions in Warwickshire last year. Whilst this is a small reduction compared to 2009 when there were 309 reported deaths and serious injuries, it is 53 per cent lower then the number recorded a decade ago (639 in 2000).

The data shows a small reduction in the number of people to lose their lives on Warwickshire’s roads, down from 27 in 2009 to 25 in 2010 and a slight fall in the total number of reported road casualties.

County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection said: “The provisional 2010 road casualty figures are very encouraging and demonstrate that the hard work and investment by the county council and our partner agencies to improve road safety is paying dividends.

“We experienced a large reduction in road deaths and serious injuries in 2009 compared to 2008 and there is always a worry that such exceptional results could be a one-off. However, that has not proved to be the case and it is very rewarding to see the long term downward trend in road casualties continue. Our challenge now is to build on the excellent progress we have made over the last decade.”

Chief Inspector Tim Bailey, head of Operations Task Force at Warwickshire Police added: “I am delighted with these figures. They reflect the commitment and dedication of the partner agencies who have worked hard to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads over the past year. We will continue to strive to protect all road users from harm and reduce these figures even further.”
