Large ‘Scale’ Tests Are Good News for Consumers!

Complaints from Warwickshire consumers about the accuracy of weighing and measuring equipment used by supermarkets prompted Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service to carry out large ‘scale’ tests on equipment used across the county.

In total, 321 scales were inspected and tested at a range of supermarkets across Warwickshire and only 11 (or 3%) were found to be inaccurate and withdrawn from use.

Mark Ryder, Head of Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service said:
“I’m delighted by the high pass rate we experienced which illustrates that both retailers are taking their responsibilities seriously and consumers can have confidence that in the vast majority of cases they are getting exactly what they paid for.”

Good advice for consumers:

· Ensure the scale display is reading zero before your goods are weighed.
· Ensure the cashier is not leaning on the scale when weighing goods
· Ensure the correct variety of fruit/veg has been selected and the display gives the right price per kilo.
· Check your receipt to ensure your have been charged the correct amount.

If you believe you have received short weight goods, please report the matter to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
