Stratford pupil is rewarded for fire safety!

Stratford pupil Joshua Parsons has been commended for taking part in the Junior Fire Safety Citizen Scheme at Shottery St Andrews C of E Primary School.

Established by Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, the Junior Fire Safety Citizen Scheme helps young people aged between 10 and 11 (year 6), to talk to older relatives or friends to see if they could benefit from having a free home fire safety check.

To become a Junior Fire Safety Citizen, Joshua had to carry out a home fire safety check at the home of an elderly friend or relative, checking key elements such as whether they have a smoke alarm fitted in their home. The check also incorporated electrical safety issues which included checking the home for overloaded plug sockets and switching off electrical items when not in use.

To recognise this achievement, Joshua was presented with a certificate on Monday 24 January. He was also presented with a £25 WHSmith gift voucher after being picked out of the monthly prize draw.

Schools Liaison Officer, Ruth Greenhalgh said:
“We were really pleased to present Joshua with his prize. As part of the scheme, Joshua not only carried out a home fire safety check, but he also put a referral through to us so that firefighters could fit free smoke alarms. By doing this he has shown a real understanding of the key fire safety issues in the home which in itself is a real achievement, so well done Joshua!”

Cllr Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, said:
“The Junior Fire Safety Citizen Scheme which is backed by the Electrical Safety Council has already proven to be a real success with young people across Warwickshire. I would like to congratulate Joshua on receiving his prize and hope that more young people will now get involved with this very worthwhile scheme.”
