Bedworth couple saved by smoke alarm!
A Bedworth couple managed to escape from a fire in their home thanks to the early warning of a smoke alarm.
Firefighters from Bedworth were called to a kitchen fire on Tamar Road, Bulkington at 5.53am this morning. On arrival crews were faced with a kitchen well alight. The house was heavily smoke logged, but the residents who were in bed when the fire began managed to escape after their smoke alarms activated.
Watch Manager, Scott Barter said:
“This is one of those occasions when you turn up to an incident and are pleased that residents have been able to escape without being hurt, all because they have invested in a £5 smoke alarm. Had they not been given that early warning, we may now be looking at a very different story as the couple were asleep in bed when the fire began. By the time they awoke, the house was already heavily smoke logged which is potentially fatal as toxic smoke can kill within minutes.”
Crews are now visiting homes in the area to ensure that residents are made aware of the dangers they face without working smoke alarms in their home.
Scott continued:
“Sometimes it takes something happening near resident’s homes for them to realise that a fire can happen anywhere. Unfortunately many residents often put off installing safety devices such as smoke alarms or planning their escape route until it is too late. In this instance we really do have something to shout about and so I would urge all residents to make sure they have a working smoke alarm in their home whilst this incident is fresh in their mind.”
Due to the severity of the fire, the house is currently uninhabitable. It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault with the fridge freezer.
