Sort it out!

A pilot is being launched at Warwickshire County Council’s Hunter’s Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre in Rugby to encourage more residents to sort their waste before visiting the site.

The County Council will draft in an extra member of staff on site at Hunter’s Lane for four weeks to meet and greet visitors and explain how to sort their items and where to take things for recycling and re-use. For a second four week period, staff will be on hand next to the general waste skip to give people advice on sorting their rubbish.

The initiative is part of a drive to increase the amount of rubbish that is recycled on site and to reduce the amount of recyclable rubbish ending up in landfill.

Councillor Alan Cockburn, Chair of Warwickshire Waste Partnership and Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “Most people that visit our recycling centres are good at sorting out their rubbish already, but there is still a fair amount of waste that could be recycled still going into the landfill skip. Every tonne of waste we send to landfill from April 1 this year will cost us around £68 and so the more we can recycle, the less it will cost the taxpayer.”

Warwickshire County Council has nine Household Waste Recycling Centres and is running many successful waste minimisation initiatives under the Recycle for Warwickshire banner. They include the Love Food Hate Waste campaign, home composting, junk mail and the home wood chipping service.

Recycle for Warwickshire is a Warwickshire Waste Partnership campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the need to reduce waste and informing residents on how to reduce, re-use and recycle household waste.
