CPE on its way to Nuneaton and Bedworth

On street parking management is to transform in Nuneaton and Bedworth as the area follows Warwick, Rugby and Stratford in moving enforcement from the police to the county council.

Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet today agreed to apply to make the borough a Civil Enforcement Area (CEA).  Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) makes parking offences a civil rather than criminal matter.

The countywide introduction of CPE is part of the county council’s Local Transport Plan (LTP) which seeks to tackle problems related to road safety, town centre access and residential environments.

In a move aimed at increasing efficiencies, the partnership enforcement service currently operating on behalf of Warwickshire County Council and Rugby Borough Council will also carry out enforcement in Nuneaton and Bedworth.  The aim is for CPE to be introduced into the borough in October 2011.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, portfolio holder for environment and economy, said:

“This is an excellent scheme for the people of Nuneaton and Bedworth as the benefits of civil parking enforcement can be achieved with relatively low set-up and operating costs and is an excellent example of how we will make our resources go further.

“When the changes have been implemented, residents, traders, visitors and shoppers should quickly see the environmental and traffic management benefits to the town centre.

“There have been a lot of requests for us to look new parking restrictions in various locations in the borough and when there is an effective enforcement regime in place, it will be possible for these to be considered.”
