New tots discovery zone at Warwick museum
St John’s Museum is holding a special family event next week to celebrate a new and improved discovery space for young children.
The museum’s popular Discovery Room has been visited by children under 5 since it was created in 2000 but after 10 years of use it was in need of a update.
New transport themed fittings have been installed including a train with seating, and display cases in the form of a bus and a cruise liner. There is also an oversized bus seat for children and adults to sit on and tell each other stories.
The new area will open to the public on Tuesday 22 February and as part of the launch, the county council’s Heritage Education Service will offer storytelling sessions throughout the day.
‘Going on a Journey?’ all about preparing for a trip and encouraging children to think about what they need to pack and prepare will be told three times through out the day at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm. Each session will last for approximately 30mins.
Also on Tuesday, for more adventurous junior visitors, there will be trail for children and their families to follow which will take them around St John’s Museum.
Other resources in the Discovery Room include six suitcases full of objects for children to play with on the different themes of; transport, holidays, shape, colour, pattern and night time.
All fittings were designed by Warwickshire Museum Services’ design team in-conjunction with Exmedia, international exhibition fitters. As part of the refurbishment, Heritage Education also commissioned professional story teller, Sally Tonge, to write some interactive stories using objects from the museum handling collection these are available for visiting families.
