March at the County Record Office

Explore the past this spring and take part in an activity at Warwickshire County Record Office.

Three Little Maids from School on Saturday 5 March will take the audience back to a Victorian classroom through the eyes of a pupil, a teacher and a headmistress. The session runs from 10am to 11.30am and is charged at £5, with refreshments provided.

Also on 5 March, The True History of Mrs Maria Home, Housekeeper at Warwick Castle gives an insight into the daily life of the Earl of Warwick and his household during the 18th century.  The talk, given by Dr Sylvia Pinches, is hosted by the Friends of the Record Office as part of their annual AGM and refreshments will be provided.  The event runs from 2.45 pm and costs £3.  There is no need to book in advance for this event and members of the public can pay on the door

Ancestry from 9.15am to 12.15pm on Saturday 12 March is an introductory course for family historians offering an in-depth look at the ancestry.co.uk website helping people to use the resource for research. Participation in the session is £12.

A free archive session on Thursday 17 March from 10am to 11am offers a chance for visitors to find out more about the record office’s online catalogue ‘Warwickshire’s Past Unlocked’.

For those who find deciphering handwritten historic records is slowing down their research, a morning course on palaeography on Saturday 19 March will be of interest. The workshop aims to unravel some of the difficulties of reading sixteenth century documents like parish registers and account books and costs £12 to attend.

Also on 19 March, Spotlight on Sport from 2pm to 4pm opens Warwickshire’s sporting history to workshop participants who can look at records including photographs, newspaper reports and collections. The session costs £5.

All events take place at the County Record Office in Priory Park, Warwick. Places are in demand for each activity and must to be booked in advance unless otherwise stated by calling 01926 738959 to avoid disappointment.
