The vote is on for leaders of the future
Warwick’s young politicians are on the campaign trail as elections for Warwickshire’s Members of UK Youth Parliament (MYPs) and VOX (Warwickshire Youth Forum) approach.
Over 40 young people aged between 12 and 18 from around the county are standing for the two elections.
The elections are organised by Warwickshire County Council who have provided a number of voting opportunities during election fortnight which runs from 28 February to 11 March.
Youngsters can vote for the junior politicians by ballot at facilities in youth centres and at most local secondary schools.
Election results for the county will be announced on Thursday 17 March at Shire Hall, Warwick, where four members of youth parliament and four deputies, along with fifteen members for VOX will be elected.
During their term of office MYPs represent the views and interests of young people in their constituency, both locally and nationally, by meeting councillors, MPs and other decision makers to take forward issues of local importance.
VOX has fifteen members with three representatives for each Warwickshire District. Members are actively engaged in local decision making, working with their adult counterparts to influence developments for young people within their districts.
Cabinet Member Cllr Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families said: “The county council works very closely with our MYPs and VOX members and we have consulted with them in the past on a number of issues including Children’s Trust priorities and use of social media.
“It is important that young people have a voice in our communities and involvement in this process provides this opportunity by getting them to think about issues that are important to them and how they can make a difference. Good luck to all the candidates.”
