Red Box Lottery success

The Red Box Lottery recycling campaign for residents in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and North Warwickshire Borough Council areas has been hailed as a success.

During the eight week campaign residents had the chance to win £50 by putting out their recycling. Each week a winner was chosen at random to receive the prize.

The aim of the campaign has been to increase the amount of recycling being collected in Nuneaton and Bedworth and North Warwickshire.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy and chair of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, said: “The Red Box Lottery has proved to be very popular with residents and has had a noticeable impact in getting people into the habit of recycling more.

“We need to send less to landfill and the only way to achieve this is for people to make use of their recycling collections and throw less waste away.”

The Warwickshire Waste Partnership has signed up to an ambitious commitment to recycle 60 per cent of waste by 2015. It is currently at 48 per cent and the Red Box Lottery is just one of the campaigns designed to help reach this target.

North Warwickshire Borough Councillor Tilly May, Chair of the Community and Environment Board, congratulated all North Warwickshire’s winners: "The Red Box Lottery scheme has certainly helped to raise awareness of the importance of recycling.

“Since we introduced plastics and cardboard to our kerbside recycling scheme in October, I’m delighted to say that we have increased our recycling from 27 per cent to 35 per cent. I’d like to say a massive thank-you to all our residents and also to our generous sponsors of the lottery scheme - Planters Garden Centre, the Midlands Co-operative, the Sandwich Factory and Tamworth Snowdome. "
