Spring clean and reuse

Spring cleaners are being urged to think of the environment as they go for the big annual clear-out.

The season is traditionally a popular time to blitz the home, and many perfectly good household items end up in the waste stream when they could easily be reused.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “You often hear the saying that one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure, and that is something we should all remember when cleaning out this spring.

“There are plenty of ways to get unwanted items to people who need them, and often donations will help to raise thousands of pounds for local charities.”

Warwickshire County Council, a member of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, is encouraging local people to donate unwanted items for reuse rather than throwing them away.
Many people discover unwanted items when spring cleaning which are too good to throw away. All across Warwickshire there are many voluntary or community organisations that will gladly take unwanted items, still in good condition, such as furniture, electrical appliances, and bicycles. They are then made available to other people in the area. To find you local reuse scheme log onto http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/reuse

Residents can also try offering their unwanted items on the internet by using the Community Freebay website http://www.communityfreebay.org.uk or using a local Freegle group http://www.freegle.org.uk
