Stomping out rhythm
Music is at the heart of a new programme in Nuneaton which is helping young people understand and appreciate world cultures.
Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service have developed the Youth Music training programme in conjunction with the County Music Service, Positive about Young People, and Warwickshire Council Voluntary Youth Services.
The programme has been up and running since September 2010 for children and young people from Camp Hill where regular sessions led by Warwickshire musicians Vince Price, Bo Davies and Nicola Braimbridge teach them all about world music through hands on experience.
As an extension of the programme, Youth Music will be holding special “Stomp” style workshops at Hub 119 on Hillcrest Road during the Easter holidays. The sessions will show youngsters how to make and play their own instruments in a range of styles using ordinary household items.
Clare Mitchell, Youth Arts Development Worker for Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service, said: “Thanks to Youth Music the young people of Nuneaton have a great opportunity to learn about a whole variety of different cultures and ways to make music as well as have a lot of fun.
“These sessions are all about participation and teamwork and anyone can get involved, whatever their technical ability. I can’t think of a better way to learn about the world and gain new skills.”
Andrew Atkins, Director of the County Music Service in Warwickshire, added: "World music has always been about community but it’s not always about expensive equipment and the Easter workshop will demonstrate this.
“I am delighted to be working in partnership with the youth service as not only is it natural expansion to our multicultural ‘Global Beats’ music programme but we are also working with new groups of young people who may not have thought about using the music service in the past.
“Music is a great leveller and transcends social, cultural and economic boundaries in a way which brings social cohesion to our communities."
The sessions at Hub 119 are open to all children aged 5 – 12 years, they don’t have to have attended Hub in the past but parents will need to complete a participation consent form. There is no need to book so children can just turn up on Tuesday 19th April between 10am-12pm or 1-3pm and Wednesday 20th April from 1-3pm.
