Safe disposal of gas bottles

A reminder is being issued by Warwickshire County Council asking residents to safely dispose of used gas bottles.

Following an incident at the Hunter’s Lane Site in Rugby recently in which a gas canister exploded while being compressed, the county council is issuing extra information about the safe disposal of gas bottles or canisters.

The best place to take all gas bottles or cylinders is back to the supplier you obtained them from. Suppliers will take back the containers free of charge and many suppliers also take back other manufacturers canisters for safe disposal or re-use too.

Ideally people should also use all of the gas in the in the bottle for its original purpose before disposing of it.

Councillor Alan Cockburn, Chair of Warwickshire Waste Partnership said: “Gas bottles are pressurised containers and contain flammable or other potentially dangerous gases.

“It is really important that the public take gas bottles back to their supplier in the first instance for safe disposal. If not, some gas bottles can be taken to the Princes Drive and Hunters Lane Recycling Centres but we have to charge for these items to cover the associated costs, whereas the supplier is able to dispose of them for free.”

There are many places throughout Warwickshire where members of the public can dispose of a variety of gas cylinders free of charge.
