Young people take on a challenge!
Warwickshire County Councils Fire and Rescue Service have been celebrating the launch of a new course aimed at helping young people with their life skills.
The course, which is being run as part of the Young Firefighters Association will run for 15 weeks at Atherstone Fire Station. The first few sessions has already taken place with fourteen young people from Queen Elizabeth School.
Those taking part will participate in a wide range of activities including:
· Training with fire service equipment including, breathing apparatus, road traffic collision cutting equipment and hose and ladders
· First aid training
· Abseiling
· Rock climbing
· Trust & team building games
They will also take part in a subsidised outward bound weekend. The course will then be completed with a formal ‘Passing out Parade’.
Watch Manager at Atherstone Fire Station, Andy Bates said:
This is great news for young people in Atherstone. The first few sessions have gone really well and we are hoping that we will be able to positively engage with the youngsters taking part to develop their team skills and leadership, giving direction and impetus at a crucial stage in their development. At present the course is specifically targeted at young people in years 9 and 10 with pupils from Queen Elizabeth School in Atherstone.”
Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, Councillor Richard Hobbs said
“I am really pleased that the service is able to continue its commitment to young people through these types of activities. The course is unique and will provide those taking part with a real opportunity to develop their skills and abilities and to learn more about what the role of the fire and rescue service actually entails.”
The course has been funded by The North Warwickshire Community Development Fund 2010/2011
