Books and support to help people with low mood available across Warwickshire

NHS Warwickshire, Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire’s Community and Voluntary Sector are reminding members of the public of the Books on Prescription programme, which offers self-help books to people who maybe feeling low, ahead of Depression Awareness Week, 11th – 17th April.

Alison McKellar, Books on Prescription Project Officer, said: “Depression is one of the most common mental health issues – in fact, one in five people will suffer from some form of depression or low mood at some point in their lives, which can make everyday things such as speaking to friends, eating a meal or just getting out of bed difficult to cope with.

“There are a number of titles and audio CDs in the Books on Prescription collection aimed at helping people manage and recover from depression and low mood and we’d encourage anyone who is feeling low to browse the Books on Prescription displays that are available in 17 libraries across Warwickshire, or to request the resources via their local library.”

All of the resources in the Books on Prescription collection follow self-help adaptations of proven clinical treatments and are recommended by mental health professionals. The books are also being ‘prescribed’ or recommended by GPs and health professionals throughout the county.
For those seeking extra support, Wellbeing Centres provide a range of services including one-to-one support and self-help advice and information. There are centres in North Warwickshire, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Rugby, Warwick, Leamington and Stratford, provided by specialist community and voluntary sector services, including Friendship, Care and Housing (FCH), Mind, and Rethink, and funded by NHS Warwickshire and Warwickshire County Council.
