Royal weddings remembered

To mark the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the County Record Office will be displaying a document from its archives which celebrates a royal wedding from the past.

A poster advertising celebrations in Nuneaton on 10 March 1863 to mark the marriage of HRH Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII), son of Queen Victoria, to Princess Alexandra, the daughter of Prince Christian (later King Christian IX) of Denmark will be on display from 18 April to 3 May.

The document found in the public search room at the County Record Office refers to lavish celebrations including a procession, a succession of balls and dinners, balloon ascents in the grounds adjoining the cotton mill, and a beacon fire on Tuttle Hill.

Members of the public will be able to view the original poster at the County Record Office, in Priory Park, off Cape Road, in Warwick, during the Record Office’s opening hours (visit http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/cro or call 01926 738959 for more information).

There is no charge to enter the searchroom or view the document, but people will be asked to provide some form of personal ID so that a readers’ ticket can be issued.
