Safety in numbers

Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Team praises local volunteers and superstore ASDA for their continued support of a road safety initiative for youngsters.

KerbSafe is a practical course comprising six road safety sessions for children aged 4 – 6. Children work in pairs with the instructor and are encouraged to talk about what they have learnt with their parents/carers to help the whole family become involved.

It has been running in Stockingford Infant school for many years – thanks mainly to volunteers and staff from Nuneaton ASDA. The supermarket has always supported staff to take part in the scheme, and encourage them to regularly visit the school to help teach children vital road safety skills.

Stan Milewski, Principal Road Safety Officer said:  “This scheme depends wholly on volunteers.  We have very much appreciated ASDA’s commitment to the success of KerbSafe in Stockingford Infants over the years and want to take this opportunity to thank them again and all the other volunteers at the school for their continued hard work and commitment to their local community.”

This scheme is a major step forward in enabling the younger children to become more aware of the potential risks associated with being near roads and traffic. But it does not encourage children to cross the road on their own, they should do so under the supervision of a responsible adult.
