Cornwall for County Boys

The award winning County Boys Choir is back in Warwickshire after a long weekend wowing Cornish crowds.

Choir Director Garry Jones took 47 members of the singing group, which now boasts more than 100 members, on tour to the Cornwall International Male Voice Festival last weekend.

After nearly six hours on the road on Friday 29 April, the boys arrived in Cornwall, and at their first appointment - singing in Truro Cathedral.

They added their voices to the Gala International Festival Concert on a programme which also included Truro Cathedral Choir, and international choral groups including Warsaw and Moscow Boys Choirs.

On Saturday 30 April, the boys enjoyed activities at the holiday park before warming up for the prestigious International Male Voice Competition in the evening where they were given a special award for the most outstanding newcomers.

The heavy rain didn’t hold the boys back on Sunday 1 May. They received a standing ovation from many brave onlookers for their performance at Cornwall’s famous open air Minack Theatre. They rounded the day off performing alongside other esteemed choirs at a Gala Festival Concert and received great applause.

The boys were welcomed back from Cornwall with the news that they have once again been selected for the National Youth Music Choral Finals at Birmingham Symphony Hall in July.

So it’s no rest for the choir as they begin preparing to fly the flag for Warwickshire for their appearance alongside some of the Nation’s top choral groups.

“I am tremendously proud of them,” said Choir Director Garry Jones. He continued: “The boys have represented Warwickshire at the highest level and ensured that choirs and their supporters from all over Europe recognise the high standards that this county can achieve.”

Andrew Atkins, Director of the County Music Service added: “Many congratulations to all the boys, it is fantastic news that in this time of austerity great things are still emerging out of Warwickshire’s music service.”
