Plastic is fantastic for recycling

Spring cleaners are being urged to think of the environment as they go for the big annual clear-out.

Warwickshire Waste Partnership is encouraging residents to recycle all plastic bottles which might be used during this year’s spring clean.

All kerbside recycling schemes and recycling centres within Warwickshire are able to accept plastic bottles including spray bottles, detergent bottles, bleach bottles, washing up bottles and shampoo bottles.

The basic rule is that if it is bottle-shaped and made from plastic, you can recycle it – but please wash and squash bottles before recycling. Empty aerosols can also be recycled in your household recycling box.

Plastic bottles can be made into more plastic bottles, or they can become many other things like park benches, fleeces or even water-butts. By recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60 Watt light bulb for six hours.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy and Chair of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, said: “We have a strong commitment to recycling and our high recycling rates would not be possible without the public doing their bit.

“By increasing the amount of household waste recycling, residents will also be saving themselves money because less will be spent on sending it to landfill.

“Our target is to reach a 60 per cent recycling rate by 2016 – which is far more ambitious than Government targets and shows how much we think we can achieve in Warwickshire.”
