One thousand tonnes saved from landfill
The amount of construction waste being sent to landfill from Warwickshire Household Waste Recycling Centres is down by 1,000 tonnes this year.
Warwickshire County Council’s campaign to reduce the disposal of hardcore soil and rubble has resulted in a dramatic drop compared to 2009/10 figures.
The campaign, fronted by Warwickshire waste mascots ‘Bob the Builder’ and ‘Barney Rubble’, has saved many thousands of pounds for the taxpayer in landfill gate fees, haulage and landfill tax.
Hardcore, rubble and soil is not classed as household waste therefore the county council reserves the right to refuse acceptance of this material. The Household Waste Recyling Centres can receive no more than three 25kg bags from householders, and staff are happy to advise visitors on alternative methods of disposal such as accessing an online community re-use network.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “We have been actively campaigning to encourage residents to consider using bulk bag services offered from local DIY stores or skip hire for more substantial works. At the end of the day, sending more waste to landfill costs the taxpayer money.
"Members of local online reuse networks often need hardcore for building projects while local allotments may be an outlet for good quality top soil. These solutions could save you the cost of disposal plus any unnecessary vehicle mess, and wear and tear.”
Warwickshire County Council will accept hardcore, rubble and soil on a chargeable basis at Princes Drive Household Waste Recycling Centre in Leamington Spa and Hunters Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre in Rugby.
