Enjoy the FA cup final responsibly

Getting together with friends to have a few beers and watch the football may seem like a good way to spend the weekend, but the charged atmosphere combined with alcohol can sometimes lead to incidents of anti-social behaviour.

County Council Community Safety Teams, Warwickshire Police, and the Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) are speaking out at this time to remind people to drink responsibly and take care.

The DAAT website http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/alcohol offers tips for sensible drinking including planning routes home, eating before drinking and alternating alcoholic drinks with soft drinks.

Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community protection added: “Unfortunately incidences of reckless drinking can cause lasting damage to people’s health and well-being as well as contribute to anti-social behaviour and increase problems such as crime and disorder instead.

“Hopefully our messages will encourage individuals to think before they drink to make sure they don’t harm themselves or others, finish up in A&E, or even in a police cell.”

Residents worried about trouble in local towns should be reassured by Superintendent Martin McNevin, Head of Neighbourhood Policing at Warwickshire Police. He said: "We welcome any fans who want to come into the towns to watch the match and enjoy themselves.

"Working with our partners a policing operation will be put in place to ensure this is an enjoyable time for all residents and visitors to our towns. The vast majority of people are well behaved, have a sensible approach to alcohol and will leave the towns having had a good time. But where any person attempts to cause trouble officers will move swiftly to stop them.

"Extra officers will be patrolling towns and key areas in the county to deter anti-social behaviour and CCTV monitoring will alert police to any problems at key locations.

"Our advice to all is always take care of yourself when you are out and about, plan how you are getting home, keep your wallet or purse safe and never drink so much that you are not in control of your actions".
