Making plans for parking enforcement
Preparations are being made by Warwickshire County Council for the proposed implementation of Civil Parking Enforcement in Nuneaton and Bedworth borough later this year.
Under this system, enforcement of on-street parking restrictions transfers from the police and becomes the responsibility of the county council in partnership with the borough council. This will allow a higher level of enforcement than at present but arrangements otherwise remains largely unchanged.
The transfer process requires the complete rationalisation of the traffic orders, yellow lines and associated signs and the consolidating of all existing Traffic Regulation Orders in the borough. The project is necessary in order to get the Secretary of State to make the order transferring powers of enforcement from the police to the local authority.
The latest stage in this process is the formal advertisement of the first variation to the Consolidated Traffic Regulation Order. These proposals are largely for the purpose of bringing the legal basis for parking restrictions within the borough in line with what motorists will find on-street. The county council will then work over the following months to bring the signs and lines showing these restrictions up to an enforceable standard.
Once this is complete, and the Department for Transport sign off for the commencement of Civil Parking Enforcement, work will then begin on introducing new restrictions to Nuneaton and Bedworth in line with requests made by the public and elected representatives.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “These proposals will not mean any significant changes to the existing parking arrangements for drivers in the Nuneaton and Bedworth borough at this moment in time. We are formally going through the process of tidying up the legal requirements to the restrictions currently in place for on-street parking.”
